At the most recent Okotoks Town Council meeting, I had the opportunity to sit in on a presentation from The Okotoks Tennis Club regarding the resurfacing of the North Reservoir Tennis Courts on Waldron Ave.
What started as a straightforward conversation about facilities gave me an idea—one that could potentially bring tourism, community engagement, and economic benefits to our town.
The Idea: An Annual “Okotoks Open” Tennis Tournament
Now, before anyone asks, “How would something like this be funded?”—let me be clear: this is just an idea at this stage. Nothing has been decided, proposed, or budgeted. I’m simply putting it out there to see if there’s interest and community appetite.
So here it is:
What if The Okotoks Tennis Club organized an annual tennis tournament, something like an “Okotoks Open”?
How It Could Work (High-Level Thoughts)
- Invitations could be extended to tennis clubs from across Alberta.
- Each club could send some of their best players to represent them.
- The event could run over a weekend:
- Friday/Saturday: Round-robin matches
- Sunday: Semi-finals and finals
It would be a celebration of sport, friendly competition, and community, all centered around our town.
What’s In It for Okotoks?
This kind of event has the potential to benefit Okotoks on several levels:
- Hotels would likely see a boost in bookings.
- Restaurants and cafés would get additional traffic.
- Shops in the downtown core could see increased foot traffic.
- And let’s be honest, our pubs might enjoy a little bump in sales as well.
Plus, local businesses might jump at the chance to sponsor or advertise during the event. It’s not just about tennis—it’s about creating an experience that supports our entire community.
Bonus: Promoting Active Living
Beyond tourism and economic benefits, something like the Okotoks Open might inspire more people, especially youth, to take up tennis or get active in general. It could help grow the sport locally, support healthy lifestyles, and encourage residents to make greater use of our community courts.
Now I Want to Hear From You
To be completely transparent, I haven’t discussed this idea with The Okotoks Tennis Club yet, or anyone else, for that matter. This is just me thinking out loud and opening the floor to you, the people of Okotoks.
So tell me:
- Would you be interested in watching an event like this?
- Would you be excited to participate?
- Or is this something you’d ignore entirely?
And if you’ve got suggestions, ideas, or feedback, please share them. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, and I’d love to hear what others think.
