A new wellness space has quietly taken root in Okotoks, offering residents a place to slow down, reconnect, and tend to their whole selves. The Healing Cocoon Collective is more than just a health and wellness centre. It’s the result of decades of experience, personal loss, and a deep belief in healing the mind, body, and spirit together.

How The Healing Cocoon Collective Came to Be

Elizabeth Muhle shared that owning a health and wellness centre has been a long-time dream.

She’s been a social worker for over 20 years and a therapist since 2013. In 2023, she opened Illumination Therapeutic Services, where she supports individuals and couples on their healing journeys. But even then, the vision didn’t stop there.

“I always knew I wanted my clients to have access to more than just therapy,” she explained. “I wanted a space where people could receive support for their mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual healing, all in one place.”

That desire eventually led her to create The Healing Cocoon Collective. With the support of several like-minded practitioners who believed in her vision, the collective was born.

Why a Whole-Person Approach Matters

Elizabeth strongly believes that healing isn’t one-dimensional.

“Mental health therapy can do incredible work on the emotional and mental side,” she said, “but it’s often most effective when it’s supported by practitioners who work with the body and the energetic or spiritual field as well.”

This philosophy is deeply rooted in her own life experience.

In 2012, Elizabeth’s late husband, Cameron, was diagnosed with cancer. Alongside conventional treatments like radiation and chemotherapy, they integrated various alternative healing modalities. Those supports, she said, helped him stay engaged in life and gave him strength during an incredibly difficult time.

What stood out most, though, was how fragmented that care felt.

“We were driving all over the place to see different practitioners,” Elizabeth shared. “I often wish there had been one place we could go. Not just for him, but for me as his caregiver.”

That gap is something she hopes The Healing Cocoon Collective helps fill, especially for those living with illness or caring for someone who is.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The name The Healing Cocoon Collective is rich with symbolism.

Elizabeth described the cocoon as a place to slow down, go inward, and be held, as well as a necessary phase of transformation. “A butterfly doesn’t rush its cocooning stage,” she said. “It sheds what no longer serves and emerges changed.”

The name also serves as a tribute to her late husband. Butterflies were deeply meaningful to them and were even the theme of their wedding.

“I used to call Cameron ‘my perfect butterfly,’” Elizabeth shared. After his passing in 2014, the quote ‘Just when the caterpillar thought the world was ending, it became a butterfly’ helped her survive her grief. “It reminded me that beauty could exist again, even after tremendous loss.”

She sees the collective as a way to share that message of hope and transformation with others.

What “Collective” Means in Practice

The Healing Cocoon Collective is home to independent practitioners, each running their own health and wellness businesses. The only exception is that Elizabeth has two contractors as part of Illumination Therapeutic Services.

“What makes us a collective isn’t shared ownership. It’s shared values,” she explained.

Practitioners work independently, but there’s space for collaboration, cross-referrals, and consultation when clients consent. This approach allows for more integrated and thoughtful care.

A Collaborative Approach to Healing

Elizabeth has already seen how collaboration makes a difference.

She shared that the physiotherapist and osteopath have consulted and referred clients to one another, sometimes even introducing clients during appointments.

“That human connection matters,” she said. “It feels much more supportive than handing someone a business card.”

Clients seeing Elizabeth for therapy often ask about other services in the building as well, opening the door to deeper, more layered healing.

Making Holistic Care Feel Accessible

For those new to holistic or alternative modalities like Reiki, Elizabeth emphasized that curiosity is always welcome.

“People are encouraged to reach out to practitioners before booking,” she explained. “That way they can ask questions and get a sense of how that practitioner might support what they’re going through.”

Currently, clients self-refer to the practitioner they feel drawn to. If additional support might be helpful, practitioners explain why and how another modality could complement the work being done.

A Space Designed to Help People Slow Down

One of Elizabeth’s hopes is that healing begins even before the appointment starts.

The waiting area offers complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and snacks. There’s a communal puzzle near the fireplace where clients can settle in and allow their nervous systems to calm.

“I really encourage people to arrive 10 to 20 minutes early, turn off their phones, and just be,” Elizabeth said.

After sessions, clients are invited to take their time transitioning back into their day. “This isn’t a space meant to rush through,” she added.

The Community Response So Far

While the collective is still spreading the word throughout Okotoks and surrounding areas, the response has been encouraging.

Many practitioners came with established practices and brought their clients with them, and visitors consistently describe the space as warm, calming, and welcoming.

What Elizabeth Looks for in Practitioners

When inviting practitioners to join the collective, Elizabeth looks for more than credentials.

She values:

  • A willingness to collaborate when appropriate
  • Independence and self-sufficiency
  • Genuine warmth and compassion
  • Passion for their work
  • Humility and awareness of professional scope

“It’s about making sure clients get the support they truly need,” she said.

Looking Ahead

As The Healing Cocoon Collective grows, Elizabeth hopes to expand both services and opportunities.

The space offers daily office rentals for part-time or growing practitioners, as well as The Sanctuary, a large room available for meditation, sound baths, workshops, and group classes.

She’d also love to welcome practitioners offering massage therapy, reflexology, naturopathy, nutrition, and other wellness services.

A Message for the Community

If there’s one thing Elizabeth hopes people take away, it’s this:

Healing, growth, and transformation are possible and they don’t have to be done alone.

At The Healing Cocoon Collective, support is offered not just through services, but through presence, care, and community which is something Okotoks has right at its heart.
