Leadership isn’t just about giving direction. It’s about building relationships, understanding people, and trusting them to succeed. I’ve learned this not in boardrooms, but on job sites, around kitchen tables, and through years of both personal and professional growth.
When I worked in the electrical trade, I often led teams that included apprentices with varying levels of experience. My job wasn’t just to make sure the wires were run properly or the lights came on at the end of the day. It was to read the room. I had to assess who could take on what task, ensure everyone had the tools they needed, and make sure we hit our deadlines without cutting corners.
That required more than technical knowledge—it required trust. And that trust came from building real relationships with the people I worked alongside.
Leadership Is Built on Relationships
I see leadership in much the same way I see my marriage. My wife and I are very different people with different strengths, and we’ve built a partnership around that. When she’s in her zone of expertise, I don’t get in the way, I trust her. And when it’s my turn to step up, she supports me the same way.
That’s not about authority. It’s about mutual respect, communication, and shared goals. Leadership works best when it follows that same principle.
Leading a community like Okotoks isn’t about commanding, it’s about connecting. It’s about listening, learning, and trusting the strengths of others to move us forward together.
A Commitment to Growth
I also believe leadership requires humility. The kind that comes from being a lifelong learner. I’ve gone back to school twice: once to retrain in draft design, and again to start my certification in project management. Both times, I stepped outside of my comfort zone because I knew I had more to learn.
Even outside of the classroom, I’ve always looked for ways to expand my skill set. Whether it’s home renovations, woodworking, or problem-solving around the house, I love learning how things work and how to make them better.
How I’ll Lead Okotoks
That’s how I approach challenges and it’s how I’d approach leadership as your mayor. I’ll never pretend to have all the answers. But I will bring experience, humility, and a commitment to listening and learning, every step of the way.
I believe Okotoks deserves a leader who understands that good leadership is more than a title. It’s earned through trust, built through relationships, and strengthened by a willingness to grow.
Thank you for considering me to serve as your next mayor. I’m ready to lead—not alone, but together.
