When I decided to run for office, one belief guided me above all else: local government exists to serve the people, not the other way around. The strongest communities are those where every resident feels empowered to have a voice, to shape decisions, and to see their input reflected in real action.
Why Empowerment Matters
Too often, residents feel disconnected from their local government. Decisions happen behind closed doors, or policies are implemented without proper consultation. That gap breeds frustration and mistrust.
I believe in flipping the script: government should be transparent, approachable, and rooted in collaboration. Empowerment means:
- Transparency – clear communication, accessible voting records, and open explanations of council decisions.
- Engagement – providing opportunities for people to voice concerns, suggest solutions, and contribute to community planning.
- Collaboration – treating citizens as partners, not just as taxpayers
How Empowerment Strengthens Communities
When people feel heard, they are more likely to contribute positively to their neighborhoods, schools, and local economy. Empowerment leads to:
- Better Decisions – because more perspectives lead to stronger solutions.
- Trust and Accountability – when people can see how decisions are made and hold leadership accountable.
- Stronger Civic Pride – residents who feel included are more likely to invest their time, energy, and creativity into their community. Many of our volunteer opportunities go unfulfilled because people are not engaged.
Practical Steps in My Vision
Empowerment isn’t just a principle—it’s a practice. Here’s how I plan to make it real in Okotoks:
- Community Polling & Surveys – before major decisions, I want residents’ input to guide the outcome.
- Publishing Votes & Explanations – every vote I take will come with an explanation, so people understand the reasoning behind it.
- Open Forums & Podcasts – monthly opportunities for residents to ask questions, hear updates, and stay connected to council activities.
- Youth and Senior Engagement – ensuring that every generation has a voice in shaping our community’s future. Both bring valuable perspectives and strengths that help our community thrive.
- Clear Financial Reporting – budgets and tax spending explained in simple, accessible terms.
My Commitment to You
Empowering citizens is not just a campaign promise, it’s a guiding principle for how I will serve. Every decision I make will start with one question: How does this impact the people who live here, and were they given a voice in shaping it?
My vision is simple: a government that works with its people, not just for them.
