Growth is inevitable. Our community is thriving, and people are drawn here for good reason: the small-town charm, the sense of belonging, and the natural beauty that surrounds us. But growth has to be managed wisely. If it’s not, we risk losing the very qualities that make Okotoks special.

My plan for sustainable growth ensures that as we expand, we do so responsibly, affordably, and with long-term vision.

Why Sustainable Growth Matters

Too often, growth is approached as “more, faster, bigger.” But real sustainability means asking:

  • Can our infrastructure support this?
  • How will this affect property taxes?
  • Does this serve the people already living here?
  • Are we protecting the character and environment of Okotoks?

For me, it’s not about saying “no” to growth, it’s about saying “yes” to the right kind of growth.

Colin’s Priorities for Responsible Growth

  1. Protecting the Small-Town Feel
Growth should never erase what makes Okotoks unique. I will advocate for development that fits our character and respects the values of our community.
  2. Smart Infrastructure Planning
Roads, water, waste, and public services need to be in place before growth accelerates. Planning ahead saves taxpayers from costly catch-up projects later.
  3. Affordable Housing Options
Families, seniors, and young people deserve the chance to stay here. Sustainable growth means supporting a range of housing options without compromising quality of life.
  4. Supporting Local Business
Growth should strengthen, not replace, local business. By supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, we keep our economy resilient and community-driven.
  5. Environmental Stewardship
Okotoks is known for its natural beauty. Sustainable growth means protecting our green spaces, managing resources responsibly, and leaving a legacy future generations can enjoy.

A Balanced Approach

I’ve seen firsthand, through my work on large-scale projects, that planning and budgeting go hand-in-hand. The same applies to managing a town’s growth. We can welcome new residents and opportunities while staying on budget and protecting taxpayers.

It’s about balance: encouraging economic growth, while keeping Okotoks affordable and true to its roots.

My Commitment to the Community

Sustainable growth isn’t a slogan; it’s a promise to make decisions today with tomorrow in mind. As your mayor, I will ensure growth benefits everyone, not just developers or outside interests.

When we get this right, Okotoks can remain the vibrant, welcoming, and affordable community we all love, while still moving forward.
