I Hear Your Frustrations
One of the issues I’ve heard the most about during this campaign is garbage collection. Whether it’s on social media, at community events, or in casual conversations, it’s clear this is a point of frustration for many, and I want you to know, I hear you.
What’s Changed, and Why It’s a Concern
Many residents feel like they’re paying the same amount (or even more), but getting less. The new system has left some families struggling with the size of their bins, especially those with young children or multiple generations living under one roof. The longer gaps between pickups can also lead to bad smells, especially during the warmer months.
I’ve also heard concerns from home-based business owners who generate more waste than the average household and feel they’re not being accommodated under the current model.
Cost vs. Value: A Tough Balance
Like many of you, I don’t fully understand how the new garbage collection system is saving money, especially when so many feel it’s less effective. That said, I’ve also been told that reverting back to the previous system would actually cost the town even more. This puts us in a tough spot, and I understand why residents are feeling stuck and unheard.
Calls for Simplicity and Flexibility
One of the most consistent requests I’ve heard is for bin collection to happen all on the same day of the week. People want predictability and simplicity in their schedules. Others have asked for options to upsize their bins, especially for larger families or small businesses operating from home.
These are practical, reasonable ideas that deserve to be looked at seriously.
What I Can Promise
I want to be clear: I can’t promise to reverse every decision or deliver every change overnight. But I can promise this: if I’m elected, I will look into all of these concerns. I will work with the town administration to understand what’s possible, what it would cost, and what changes could be implemented to improve service while respecting our budget.
If things like larger bin options, consistent pickup days, or added flexibility are feasible, I will work to make them happen.
Let’s Move Forward Together
I believe Okotoks deserves a waste collection system that reflects the needs of its people, efficient, fair, and easy to use. I also believe in honest leadership that listens and acts based on facts, not just frustration.
If you have more feedback, ideas, or concerns, I want to hear them. Let’s keep the conversation going and build a better Okotoks, together.
